ABOUT THE MEDITATION

This week’s meditation session is led by Swami Chidananda and the theme is: Liberation.

The guided meditation begins at 19:29.

For centuries Himalayan practitioners have used meditation to quiet the mind, open the heart, calm the nervous system, and increase focus. Now Western scientists, business leaders, and the secular world have embraced meditation as a vital tool for brain health.

Whether you’re a beginner, a dabbler, or a skilled meditator seeking the company of others, join expert teachers in a forty-five-minute weekly program designed to fit into your lunch break. Each session will be inspired by a different work of art from the Rubin Museum’s collection and will include an opening talk, a twenty-minute meditation session, and a closing discussion.

Loving Mother of Wisdom, Sherab Chamma in Tibetan, is the principal female deity of the Bon religion. The word bon, meaning “truth,” belongs to the Zhang Zhang language, an ancient language of western Tibet. The Bon religion is indigenous to Tibet, the broader Himalayan region, and Central Asia. Buddhism was introduced to Tibet in the eighth century of the Common Era. Today’s Tibetan Buddhism incorporates aspects of the Bon religion.

The primary role of the Loving Mother of Wisdom is that of a compassionate maternal figure that encompasses the nature of wisdom. She is the mother of all Bon deities and Enlightened Ones. She has multiple names and various forms, both peaceful and wrathful. As we gaze upon her may she imbue us with nurturing and caring qualities.
